Short presentation:

The Remote Sensing Centre is the research department within the Institute of Geodesy and Cartography in Warsaw. It is the main centre in Poland dealing with digital processing of multisource satellite / aerial images and with using remotely sensed information for multidisciplinary purposes. Extensive experience of the Centre in remote sensing and GIS applications resulted in its recognising as the National Focal Point for undertaking joint international activities, related to Earth Observation programmes. Activities of the Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Centre cover the broad range of research and application-oriented works.

Research activities:

·      using aerial and satellite images for land cover/land use mapping with different levels of detail and for updating land cover maps by application of new-generation satellite data

·      the application of satellite and airborne remote sensing for inventorying and examining various components of geographic environment, it also performs scientific expertise related to mapping of the state of geographic environment with the use of remotely sensed data

·      works on developing geographic information systems, develops methods and techniques of computer-aided cartography and performs expertise related to spatial information systems and computer-aided cartography

·      creation of satellite image maps at different scales

·      creation of remote sensing based system of dynamic grassland soil moisture determination and yield forecasting (CORINE Land Cover, CORINE Biotope Programmes, CORINE 2000 as well as MARS Programme covering four Actions: Regional Inventory, Agromodelling, Forest Ecosystems and Land Degradation)

·      the  cover integrated methods for monitoring and evaluation of natural and cultivated landscape vegetation for status, stress and drought, using remote sensing techniques. The problems of application of NOAA meteorological images for crop condition assessment in Poland, preparation of methods for drought detection, forecasting and monitoring, as well as crop yield prediction based on modelling using satellite information.
